Create a new return - Create a .TAX file

The NETFILE button invokes the Netfile wizard:

Netfile wizard

The Netfile wizard is similar to the quick start wizard. The first page contains a set of instructions that explains certain aspects of generating a .TAX file. You need to review these instructions at least the first time you generate a Netfile .TAX file.

Address change

The second page contains an important NETFILE restriction that you should be aware of. Some personal information are not encoded in the .TAX Netfile file and you need to contact CRA before using Netfile if there are any changes since your last return. Make sure to pay attention to these restrictions otherwise your refund may be sent to your old address. Also, you need to acknowledge that you have read and understood the statement by checking the box highlighted by the red circle.

If those restrictions do not apply to your situation, then press "Next>" to continue:

restrictions

This page lists a set of uncommon tax situations that prevent users from using Netfile to file their returns. Read the list just in case it applies to your situation.

Press "Next>" if none of the above situations applies to you. The next page may contains a list of errors. If no error is found in your return, a list of warnings may be shown on the next page. The next page shows a case where a warning is generated:

warning

Many of these warnings are CRA requirements and may not affect your tax calculation. The software is required to encode some optional information needed by CRA. In this case (1) the amount of line 121 may contains various sources of investment income and the software is inviting the user to specify the details using the Netfile form. At this point you can decide to ignore the warning and continue or you can exit from the wizard and provide the extra details. If you decide to exit the wizard, then you can press either "Cancel" or "Finish" as shown by number (2) above.

Netfile form

You can access the Netfile form by selecting the Federal Forms tab(highlighted by the bottom red circle) and then select the Netfile tab from the top tab(highlighted by the top red circle). In this case you enter the amount from line 121 to line 9909.

Restart the Netfile wizard by pressing on the NETFILE button again. Press "Next>" until you get past the warnings page. Note that even though you change line 9909 of Netfile, this particular warning will still get displayed. Ignore it the second time and continue:

pick file

This page shows the name and location of the .TAX NETFILE file. The default location is set to your computer My Document folder. Optionally you can change the name and/or location of the file by using the button in the middle of the page. For the purpose of this tutorial the location is change to D:\Tmp and the name is still using the default name made of the first name and last name.

Press "Next>" to continue:

generating

this page shows the Netfile generation progress. Once done you can press "Next>" to continue.

Netfile Ready

This very important page contains all you need to file your return using Netfile. The only extra information you need is your CRA access code that you should have received from CRA. If you did not receive an access code, then you need to contact CRA to get an access code.

If you have an access code and your ready to file your return, then click on the CRA netfile link or go to the following link http://www.netfile.gc.ca/rdy-eng.html

From this point on, you will be using CRA Netfile web site and NOT StudioTax.

The Next page provides detailed steps to complete filing your return using the CRA web site. Use Next> below to continue with the tutorial.
